NAS Meridian and Marine Aviation Training Support Squadron ONE were among those invited to a ceremony honoring Willie Love, who served as a corporal in the Marine Corps during WWII.
The Montford Point Marine Association presented Mr. Love's family with the Congressional Gold Medal for his service.
Montford Point Marines are the first African Americans to enlist in the Marine Corps after President Franklin Roosevelt issued an Executive Order establishing the Fair Employment Practices Commission in June 1941.
The recruits trained at Camp Montford Point in Jacksonville, NC, from Aug. 26, 1942 until the camp was decommissioned on Sept. 9, 1949. (NAAS Meridian 07/31/23) (4) Facebook
