Goodbye USS Mobile Bay

The Navy bid fair winds and following seas to USS Mobile Bay (CG 53) after more than three decades of service. The Ticonderoga class guided-missile destroyer was decommissioned during a ceremony at Naval Base San Diego on Aug. 10 attended by current and former crewmembers. The inactivated ship will be towed to the Navy’s inactive ship facility in Bremerton, Wash. (Stars & Stripes 08/11/23)

Background: Named for Civil War battle on Mobile Bay, Ala., in August 1864. The ship was ordered from Ingalls Shipbuilding in Mississippi on Jan. 15, 1982. She was laid down on June 6, 1984, launched on Aug. 22. 1985, and commissioned on Feb. 21, 1987 at the Alabama State Docks in Mobile, Alabama.
