Heat-related stand down at Shelby

CAMP SHELBY, Miss. - An Illinois National Guard member died at Camp Shelby from a heat-related illness, Mississippi National Guard (MNG) officials said. The 38-year-old guardsman died Aug. 10 at the nearby Forest General Hospital after falling ill.

On Aug. 12, an 18-year-old member of the MNG was taken to a hospital for treatment of a heat-related illness after exercising outdoors.

The soldier experienced a medical emergency after completing a 2-mile run as part of an of the Army Combat Fitness Test, the MNG said in a statement.

A base spokesperson told CNN the soldier was immediately assessed by on-site medics.

The Illinois guardsman was at Camp Shelby for leadership school at the Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center, according to Lt. Col. Deidre Smith, director of public releases for the MNG.  Temperatures were above 100 over the weekend.

The MNG is currently in a safety stand down and putting restrictions for guardsmen because of the extreme heat. No physical training will be held outdoors until further notice.

The stand down is for advising service men and women "not do physical training as an organization during daylight hours until the heat is reduced," Smith said.

The MNG is not releasing his name out of respect for his family, she said.

But, Forrest County Deputy Coroner Lisa Klem identified the soldier as 38-year-old Nathaniel Jefferson of Chicago, Ill.

The National Guard is investigating. (WAPT 08/14/23)
