Operating in the Eastern Pacific with a Coast Guard law enforcement detachment (LEDET) aboard, USS Gabrielle Giffords (LCS-10) interdicted a so-called narco submarine on Dec. 5. Narco subs are one way traffickers smuggle cocaine from Colombia into North America. Giffords is part of U.S. Southern Command’s enhanced counter-narcotics operations, the command announced. In this case, the three-person crew were arrested, along with 4,806 pounds of cocaine. The value of the payload was over $100M. Gulf Coast Note: LCS 10 was built at Austal USA in Mobile, Ala.
