A former RF-4C Phantom II jet, once flown by Meridian's 186th Air Guard Unit, is scheduled to return home in June after 30-plus years. The jet will be disassembled June 6 and shipped from Davis-Monthan AFB in Arizona to Meridian. It will be reassembled here and put on display at East Mississippi Veterans Memorial Park. Jeffrey Summerlin, president of the East Mississippi Veterans Foundation, located the jet in 2018 and began plans for it at the Meridian park. The RF-4C Phantom II first arrived in Meridian on Sept. 21, 1979, where it was used as an unarmed reconnaissance vehicle to track weather. It was retired and delivered to the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group at Davis-Monthan AFB in September 1991, where it sits today. The jet will be placed at its resting spot in the memorial park adjacent to Key Field. The job is anticipated to take several weeks. (Source: Meridian Star 02/29/22)
