PASCAGOULA, Miss. - Ingalls Shipbuilding workers, sailors and the family of the late U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska gathered March 9 for a keel authentication of the ship named for Stevens. The ceremonial welding marked the foundation of HII-Pascagoula's new guided-missile destroyer. Stevens was a pilot in WWII. The Alaska Republican served in the Senate from 1968-2008. He died at the age of 86 in 2010. The late senator’s wife, Catherine, and their daughters took part in the ceremony, and calling it “a marvelous moment,” according to WLBT in Jackson.
