Shell Catalysts-La. investing $121M

PORT ALLEN, La. - Shell Catalysts & Technologies announced an investment of $121.7M to expand its West Baton Rouge Parish facility.

Improvements to the plant - the largest refining catalyst plant in the worldwill increase production of high-performance catalysts used to generate a less energy-intensive refining process.

The company expects to add 17 new jobs to its current workforce of 86.

“Shell Catalysts & Technologies’ mission to develop innovative technical solutions in its refining process "aligns with the state’s Climate Action Plan" and new opportunities for the state's workforce, said Gov. John Bel Edwards.

Catalysts are substances used din the manufacturing process to increase the rate chemical reactions occur. These substances are used in the production of items ranging from biofuels and sustainable aviation fuel to shoes.

Shell Catalysts & Technologies, which has been at Port Allen for 13 years, develops state-of-the-art products that are activated by lower amounts of heat, electricity or steam, resulting in a reduced energy intensive refining process.

Early-phase construction began this year. Installation of new equipment is anticipated in September 2024 with product qualification finishing in December 2024. (Louisiana Economic Development 05/18/23)
