Throwbot base security innovation

As part of Eglin AFB, Fla.’s efforts to use innovative technology, a football-sized device – called the Throwbot - is being tossed into the arena of assisting base security. Throwbot is a throwable microrobot that records and transmits video and audio reconnaissance to an operator’s control unit, and is being used by the 96th Security Forces Squadron. The device gives response teams a safe way to assess a situation, make informed decisions, and perform tasks that can lead to saving lives. “It took five minutes for me to learn how to use it,” said Leon Gray, 96th SFS, after seeing it demonstrated at trade shows. The Throwbot acquisition plan was presented at an iSpark meeting July 1. Nine days later, Throwbot was approved and purchased. A camera on its front allows an operator to see what it sees.  The control unit contains a joystick to guide the device, a video monitor and antennas. Video can be fed to an external monitor. (Source: Eglin AFB 08/11/20) https://www.eglin.af.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/2303096/throwbot-enhances-base-security-mission/
