Tackling the brain drain in Miss.

STARKVILLE, Miss. – From the battlefield and wall street to the Golden Triangle, Camgian Microsystems – headquartered here - is a software company with a product range from commercial use to national security; but lately, they’re tackling the issue of brain drain from the state of Mississippi. Hundreds of college graduates leave the state due to a lack of job opportunities. Camgian is trying to change that issue. Camgian designs products for commercial sale, but specializes in military equipment, says VP of Defense Programs, Doug Gosney. “We build a variety of different sensor and information technology platforms such as radar systems, cameras, that can be deployed on the battlefield to collect real-time information,” said CEO Gary Butler. One of those products is the Low Power Radar and Imaging System than can see up to five football fields away. In the last several years, Camgian has become a hub for engineers graduating from nearby universities. “We’re slowing that brain-drain, and we’re aggressively recruiting the top students at both Mississippi State and the University of Alabama,” said Butler. Military veterans are also finding their way to Starkville. He said it’s important to develop and keep educated people in the state.
