Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart identified the male victim as 22-year-old Flynn Brown of New Jersey, a JSU student. He was shot and found inside a Dodge Challenger on campus. The incident happened around 8 a.m. Friday. According to the MBI spokesperson Bailey Martin, the suspect in custody was identified as 20-year-old Randall Smith of New Orleans.
Officials from the Hinds County coroner, sheriff's office and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are on the Jackson State University campus near Dixson Hall early Dec. 2. JSU President Thomas Hudson was also on scene. Capitol police blocked off the area until investigators could ascertain more information. Officials would not provide information about what was being investigated. However, coroners are not usually called to a scene unless there is a death. This would potentially be the second JSU death in recent weeks. Geronimo Warner, 21, was pronounced dead Nov. 9. He was a member of JSU basketball from 2019-22. (Clarion Ledger 12/02/22)
WBLT Jackson regarding the investigation: Few details are available about what happened. but crime scene tape has been placed around the parking lot of Dixson Hall near the water tower. WLBT crews also saw investigators placing a body inside the coroner’s marked vehicle. (12/0222)
WVTA Tupelo: JSU police issued an e-mail alert: “There is an ongoing investigation on campus and officials are on the scene in the Tiger World parking lot. There is no active threat and the campus remains open.”
WBLT UPDATE: MBI and JSU's campus enforcement are investigating a homicide on the school’s campus. Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart confirmed it was a male victim. JSU President Thomas K. Hudson released a statement: “It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the death of a JSU student. ... Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.” Though details are few, Hudson said a person of interest is in custody. (12/02/22)
