Update: La. rep is House Speaker

UPDATE:  Rep. Mike Johnson, a little-known Republican lawmaker from Louisiana, is now second in line for the presidency after winning a vote to become the next speaker of the House, more than three weeks after Rep. Kevin McCarthy's ouster left the chamber without a leader.

Johnson prevailed after a chaotic process that saw three other GOP nominees fail to unite the party and secure a majority. He won 220-209 in the House vote on Wednesday with unanimous support among Republicans, who enjoy a slim majority in the chamber. (cbs 10/25/23) Mike Johnson is the new speaker of the House. Louisiana Republican Rep. Mike Johnson, a deputy whip and constitutional lawyer known for his fiery exchanges on the Judiciary Committee, is the fourth nominee chosen by his GOP peers to serve as speaker

In a crucial and legacy-defining decision, he sided with former President Donald Trump and voted to overturn the 2020 election results

Johnson, the vice chair of the House Republican Conference, faces steep odds to get the 217 votes needed to win, especially considering he already has more than 40 votes against him. Holdouts mostly favor ousted former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).

While Johnson had no opponents during the private roll call, around two dozen Republicans didn’t vote, more than enough to sink his nomination.

A vote on Johnson's nomination as Speaker is expected to be held Oct. 25.

Johnson, 51, was a state representative for two years before being elected to Congress in 2016. In addition to the Judiciary committee, he serves on the Armed Services Committee.

He earned a bachelor’s degree and law degree from Louisiana State University. (USA TODAY 10/4/23) Who is Mike Johnson? What to know about the GOP representative nominated for House speaker (yahoo.com)
