Multiple MS tornadoes confirmed

RIDGELAND, Miss. - Multiple tornadoes were confirmed overnight June 18-19, according to Gov. Tate Reeves, who said damage assessments were underway Monday morning. 

One person was killed and 25 injured in Louin, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency. MEMA said of those 25, 18 were hospitalized. 

tornado struck Rankin County, southeast of Florence, and in Jasper County from Louin to Bay Springs to Turnerville. 

Mississippi residents have seen severe weather for nine straight days. Thousands of residents have been without power for days. 

Entergy Mississippi President and CEO Haley Fisackerly said more than 2,000 workers from six states have been called in to help Entergy linemen restore power. (WAPT 06/19/23) 

Continued weather threat today

More than 50M people across the Southeast face the threat of more severe weather, including tornadoes, on June 19. MEMA noted more than 49,000 customers have no power in the central Mississippi. 

The severe weather threat persists June 19 with a Level 2 of 5 slight risk of severe weather across parts of the Gulf Coast and the Southeast, including New Orleans and Baton Rouge in Louisiana, and Mobile, Alabama eastward. The main threats are damaging winds, hail and isolated tornadoes. 

South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel received 20 storm victims from the Louin area, including one who died, spokesperson Becky Collins told CNN. The other patients are stable, and most have been discharged. 

The June 19 threat follows more than 70 storm reports across the Southeast on Sunday, according to the Storm Prediction Center, including up to eight tornado reports, mostly in central Mississippi. (CNN 06/19/23)


SNAP replacement benes for MS storm victims

JACKSON, Miss. - SNAP recipients who were without power for more than six hours as a result of the recent storms, can apply for replacement benefits. 

The Mississippi Department of Human Services asked families to apply for SNAP replacement funds through the MDHS website or their local county office within 10 days of the date of the power outage. 

The completed form may be submitted by mail, email, or uploaded to the MDHS website using the document upload feature. The Economic Assistance Customer Service Center can be contacted at 800-948-3050 if assistance is needed.
