GenSea opens door to STEM jobs

Mississippi’s coastal “Blue Economy” is an economic giant. It contains shipbuilding, oil exploration and “newbies” that develop robotic marine exploration tools and renewable energy resources. Additional markets include NOAA and NASA that employ highly technical staff. Jobs are growing throughout the sector. Thanks to generous support from the Robert M. Hearin Support Foundation, the Center for Science and Mathematics Education and the School of Ocean Science and Engineering at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) are leading a partnership called GenSea. GenSea professionals are spreading the word about STEM careers across the Gulf South; and a pair of USM programs - Ocean Engineering and Hydrography - that prepare students to walk right into careers after graduation. “Most people have no idea these emerging fields exist ... in our back yard,” shared GenSea Director of Communications & Curriculum Tara Skelton. Additionally, USM is the only university in the country to offer a Hydrography curriculum. GenSea provides interactive field trips for high school students free of charge to its cutting-edge training and research facilities and hands-on STEM projects. Teams also visit classes across the region to share information virtually or in person. Over the summer, GenSea will host teacher development opportunities to learn about coastal growth and STEM career opportunities with CEU credits. GenSea will also work with USM and partners to sponsor paid summer internships. (Source: USM 02/02/22) https://usm-gensea.org/
