CRAFT lab new to pilot training

Vance AFB, Okla., is the third Air Force training facility base to open a flight-line peak-performance healthy CRAFT laboratory devised as a new way to approach pilot-training. The lab consists of gym equipment and cognitive training technology for instructor and student-pilots. CRAFT is a healthcare effort that was devised at Luke AFB, Ariz., in 2018. It is designed as a new approach for pilot treatment in order to ensure professional care matches the high-speed pace of fighter pilots. CRAFT teaches pilot culture, instead of trying to change bad habits. In January, Columbus AFB, Miss., activated its CRAFT Team. The goal of CRAFT is to teach healthy habits and lifestyles from day one and making it part of being a professional aviator, Maj. Ryan Holets, the program manager of CRAFT, says. After the success of Vance’s CRAFT team, other training bases are following suit to make sure pilots across the AF are all being taught fundamental practices to make them better, Holets said.
