Cmte proposal OKs MS redistricting

Mississippi's 2nd Congressional District is set to expand after the state's Joint Legislative Committee on Redistricting voted Dec. 15 to finalize a proposal for redrawing the state's four Congressional districts. The committee OK'd its final proposal for redistricting that would keep incumbents in place. The plan will appear before the legislature for vote at the start of the 2022 session. Mississippi has three Republicans and one Democrat in Congress. The 2nd District is led by the lone Democrat, Bernie Thompson. His district would add most of Hinds County and Jackson to the district. Rep. Michael Guest (R-Flowood) represents the 3rd district, and would lose four SW counties. Adams County, the largest, is home to Natchez and typically votes Democratic. Thompson needed to add to his district, after people moved away from the Delta over the past decade. The other two districts, represented by Michael Guest and Steven Palazzo, remain relatively unchanged. All three Black lawmakers on the committee voted against the plan.
