Overrun Pearl causes evacuations
RIDGELAND, Miss. - Trash cans and mallard ducks floated through overrun neighborhoods here Feb. 14 along the rain-swollen Pearl River. Residents packed what they could and fled to higher ground in advance of a potential devastating weekend of flooding. The Pearl River, which flows through neighborhoods and businesses near Jackson, may reach a level not seen since 1979, forecasters warned. Nearly 12-inches of water surrounded dozens of mobile homes in the Harbor Pines Mobile Home Community. Lawn chairs, trash cans and ducks were floating around under sunny skies Friday. The area is under a mandatory evacuation order. Police patrol for security. Firefighters went door-to-door telling residents they need to leave. Miles south, flood maps showed waters could cover downtown Jackson streets, and come within blocks of the Mississippi Capitol building by Sunday, when the Pearl was forecast to crest.
