Raising Six Flags over NOLA East

NEW ORLEANS - The abandoned Six Flags site has been a blight on New Orleans East for 18 years. Now, the 227-acre site could be reimagined into something more positive after a "first-step" agreement to redevelop the site between the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority and Bayou Phoenix. "This is a major, major step over a major hurdle for a major development site in our community," Councilman Oliver Thomas told WWL. The City Council allocated $1M to mitigate and clean up the site. Six Flags opened in May 2000 and closed in August 2005 - following Hurricane Katrina. Troy Henry with Bayou Phoenix says the $500M project will take 42 months to complete. Its plans call for a sports plex, indoor/outdoor complex, a couple of hotels - suite hotel and a traditional hotel - an indoor/outdoor water park, retail and movie studio. Bayou Phoenix will hold a public information session by around the end of March, where it will present its master plan. (NOLA.com 03/07/23)
