Regional air travels trending up

TUPELO, Miss. - Passenger boardings nose-dived in 2019 due to airlines cutting back service in the midst of the pandemic, but travelers are beginning to re-board and willing to travel again, it appears, according to EFT Trends’ analysis. For the second month, Tupelo Regional Airport boarded more than 1,000 passengers. In April, Contour Airlines, flying to and from Nashville, posted 1,194 boardings. Last year, there were only 87. Through April 2021, there’s been 3,423 boardings, about even to those first four months in 2020 (restrictions from pandemic). As restrictions have been lifted, the larger airlines are filling up again. Airport and airline officials are hoping for additional momentum. In 2019, TRA saw nearly 16,000 boardings, the most in the last 10 years. Since May 2018 through February 2020, TRA flew at least 1,000 passengers every month. According to ETF Trends, consultants are predicting U.S. domestic air travel will fully recover by early 2022.
