Tug traffic moving under I-40 bridge

NEW ORLEANS - The Coast Guard issued a waterway restriction to all vessel traffic on the Lower Mississippi River on May 12 near the I-40 bridge in Memphis, Tenn. The waterway restriction closes the river to all vessel traffic between mile markers 736 and 737 and was put in place due to a crack discovered by the Arkansas Department of Transportation on the I-40 bridge. There are currently 16 vessels with a total of 229 barges in the queue. (Source: Coast Guard 05/12/21) Coast Guard closes portion of Lower Mississippi River near I-40 bridge (govdelivery.com)

UPDATE: Repairs to the I-40 bridge linking Arkansas and Tennessee could take months after a crack was found in the span, forcing thousands of trucks and cars to detour and shutting down shipping on a section of the Mississippi River, a transportation official said Wednesday. UPDATE2River traffic reopened May 14 on the Mississippi River near Memphis, three days after it was closed when a crack was discovered in the I-40 bridge that connects Tennessee and Arkansas, the Coast Guard said Friday. More than 60 tugboats hauling more than 1,000 barges were in line Friday to cross under the Hernando De Soto Bridge.
