Biden supports GC Amtrak return

The Biden Administration has officially tossed its support behind Amtrak’s return to the Gulf Coast. The confirmation came in a letter from John Putnam, acting general counsel with the U.S. Department of Transportation to the U.S. Surface Transportation Board. The STB is charged with ruling whether Amtrak can restart a twice-daily service between Mobile, Ala., and New Orleans. The service also calls for four stops in Mississippi – Pascagoula, Biloxi, Gulfport and Bay St. Louis. Putnam’s letter urges the STB to “act expeditiously on Amtrak’s application” to restore the service. The letter reaffirms support from President Joe Biden for expanding the rail network through a $2.3T infrastructure program. Amtrak wants to restart the Gulf Coast quickly because it has a targeted time frame of running trains by New Year’s Day 2022. (Source: AL.com 05/12/21)
