'Hogs for the Cause' NOLA-style

NEW ORLEANS - Hogs for the Causea New Orleans-based nonprofit that provides financial assistance to the families of children undergoing treatment for brain cancer, has surpassed $10m in grants and contributions since 2009. 

Becker Hall, Hogs co-founder/CEO, said the organization has presented more than 1,800 direct family grants, totaling $2.3M, and has formed strategic partnerships with hospitals nationwide to aid families with children diagnosed with ailments other than brain cancer. 

In addition to family grants, Hogs tallies nearly $9M in contributions to nine beneficiaries in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Jackson, Miss., Greenville, S.C., Atlanta and Columbia, S.C. 

Most recently, Hogs announced a $1.5M gift to Children’s of Mississippi for the renovation of a 22,500-square-foot “Hogs for the Cause Wing” dedicated to inpatient beds for children and a $1M contribution to Prisma Health Children’s Hospital in S.C. 

Hogs for the Cause will celebrate its 16th year of operation on April 5-6 on the grounds of the UNO Lakefront Arena. 


Grant to aid migrant children across Mississippi

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State University has been provided $4M in federal funding enabling the university to continue meeting the educational needs of about 750 migrant children across the state through the Mississippi Migrant Education Service Center.

The 5-year grant supports MSU’s efforts to provide supplemental academic and support services to agricultural migrant families in the state. 

Anchored in MSU’s College of Education, the service center has received federal funding since 2006 to ensure migrant children have access to all opportunities offered by a public education.

The center offers tutoring, advocacy, school supplies, after-school and summer programs, parent training classes, referrals for medical services and more. (MSU 11/20/23)
