Hot housing in East Mississippi

Some East Mississippians have been rethinking how and where they live during this pandemic time out. As a result, there’s been increased interest in home buying/selling in Meridian and Lauderdale County, Miss. August home closings in 2020 (37) were more than double 2019 (16), according to stats provided by Terry Winstead, chairman of Multiple Listing Service for East Mississippi Realtors. In Meridian, June closings were up 32 percent over last year, while August was up 131.2 percent. Winstead anticipates September’s closings to higher because closings take 30-to-45 days. Realtor Malcolm Martin told the Meridian Star: “Interest rates are the main driver of activity these days." 30-year fixed mortgage rates were at 2.91 percent or better on Aug. 27 compared to 3.55 percent in 2019, according to the National Association of Realtors. The East Mississippi Realtors board includes Clarke, Kemper, Lauderdale, Neshoba and Newton counties.
