CARES effects on airline mechanics

The financial help to airlines under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES) come with restrictions and conditions: Grants for payrolls; and forbidden involuntary layoffs through September. Loans come with a requirement to maintain staffing at a 10 percent reduction until the fourth quarter. Airlines taking loans also “may” be required to maintain some service in markets they served as of March 1. Payroll assistance provisions are designed to provide immediate financial relief necessary to continue funding those payrolls of U.S. airlines, according to Airlines For America (A4A) President Nick Calio. “We remain hopeful that the federal government will expeditiously release these funds with as few restrictions as possible …” The aid package, while lauded by A4A, could have different effects on mechanics at different airlines.
