With aging residents, low birth rates, COVID-19 and immigration cutbacks, 16 states are/have been seeing decreases in population. The U.S. is experiencing the slowest national population growth since the Great Depression. The nation grew about 7% between 2010-20, similar to the previous historic low between 1930-40, according to new Census Bureau estimates, which do not reflect the 2020 census counts. The agency will release the final 2020 census tally in March. The 16 states that are experiencing a decline in population are Louisiana, Mississippi, California, Massachusetts, Ohio, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Alaska, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia.
