PANAMA CITY, Fla. - COMBAT Sentry got under way at Tyndall Air Force Base on July 13. It’s the first of its kind of exercise for the Air Force. The exercise is part of the AF’s Weapons System Evaluation Program (WSEP) and it will last until July 24. The exercise will be conducted using the E-3 AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) aircraft instead of combat jets. The exercise is hosted by 81st Air Control Squadron out of Eglin AFB. “It’s evaluating them in situations that is combat relevant for the AWACS in understanding the full battle sphere and managing it,” said Lt. Gen. Savanah Bray of 53rd Wing at Eglin AFB. COMBAT Sentry will use sub-scale drones (BQM-167 and QF-16s) from the 82nd Aerial Targets Squadron to evaluate the AWACS. The environment will include simulated cruise missiles, live fire operations, and maritime operations.
