Rep: Promised pay raise at risk

The 3.1 percent pay raise promised military personnel and retired civil service workers may be at risk of political turmoil over the FY 2020 defense budget, and impeachment inquiries, Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-Texas), ranking Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, said Oct. 23. Various military specialty pays may also have to be approved in the now-stalled defense authorization legislation and by several appropriations committees. The pay raise and other vital defense programs will remain at FY-19 fiscal 2019 funding levels unless Congress passes an FY-20 budget by a Nov. 21 deadline, he said. "We have to pass it. Nothing is safe until we pass it," he said of a range of initiatives, including pay raises.
